I love Fleming's short stories as these are the tales he uses to highlight his observations of humanity and love, things you don't see in the regular novels. It's an interesting change of pace to see Bond take a backseat to other's stories, such as in "Quantum of Solace" and "Octopussy." "Quantum" is perhaps my favorite short as it contains, in my opinion, one of the most astounding observations about a relationship. (FYI, the movie, although great, has nearly nothing to do with the story.) The other stories are thrillers, such as "Risico," where Bond helps bust a drug ring in Rome. "The Hildebrand Rarity," despite having a bizarre title, provides some wonderful characterization for Bond, fleshing him out in our minds. Definitely a great read.   hide

Get it for Risico, best of the lot.

Being a fan of James Bond, but never having read any of Ian Fleming's novels, I was eager to read this collection of short stories. Unfortunately, the overall quality of these stories were merely average. Fleming has an overly detailed, meandering style that left me dissatisfied as a reader. I highly doubt that I'll attempt to read any of his novels after this experience.

These shorts are nothing like the Bond films...I think I like this better.

My introduction to reading James Bond. Fleming has an easy, fluent style that allows you into the head of 007. Good stuff.

I am still a few stories away but I recommend this as many of these short stories were combined to make movies. The one that will disappoint you thought, if you have seen the movie, is Quantum of Solace. I splashed out an bought the rather excellent hardback edition. The stories are like mini-novels, which is not as silly as it sounds, as the stories are crammed full of the signatures of Fleming's longer books. A superb addition to the book shelf.
