i love this book. it never gets old and i've read it about a dozen times

Literary prose, lyrical setting . . . . I love this book! It's the kind I want to write.

Have a genre commitment problem? Then this is your book! Historical fiction that takes place in upstate NY in the early 1900s- so many characters that are real and true and walk right off the pages. The book is an exciting, frustrating, maddening journey and touches so many topics in such a passionate way. Never disappointing, and though the close comes quickly, it works perfectly.

Based on a real incident in 1906, this story was a well written fictionalized version of what might have led up to the murder of Grace Brown. The fictional character of Mattie sees, hears and knows more than she wants to at her young age. She knows how hard life can be already but hangs on to her seemingly impossible dream of going to school and writing. I shouldn’t say I always enjoy reading...more

I shouldn’t say I always enjoy reading about the struggles of the times but reading about the hardships, the hard work and the things that had to be given up, the way neighbors helped one another makes me realize more about what’s really important in life. The story had a little bit of mystery and a satisfying ending. I give it a good strong four stars.   hide

Amazing book! It's a grown-up Little House in the Big Woods with a murder mystery twist. I couldn't stop turning pages, and now that I've finished it, I can't stop thinking about the incredible cast of characters. Mattie, Pa, Weaver, Emmie Hubbard, Minnie, Royal, Miss Wilcox...they're all still on my mind...and I suspect they will be for a long while. A Northern Light...more

Beautiful book. Encourages everyone to never give up on your dreams. Sounds lofty and flowery, but it isn't written that way. Wonderful read.

One of my absolute favorite books.Simple and sweet. A must read.
