He ended up at Bergen-Belsen, where he and his wife were exterminated. I visited Amsterdam for the first time in 2005, and went to the museum. I expected to be affected by the experience, but was nevertheless surprised by how strongly the visit impacted me. The emotions I felt were a mix of my immediate reaction to the tour I took of those cramped quarters, and the memories I still have of the poignant, sometimes innocent, sometimes world-weary musings of the young author, whose work I had read many years previously.
