Just about the only thing this novel and its movie adaptations have in common is the name of the planet.

Stanislaw Lem's bog er en værdig konkurrent til Clarke's rumrejser 2001, 2010 og 2061. (Har ikke læst 3001 endnu). Lem er en filosof med interessante psykologiske spørgsmål for øje. Godt skrevet og let læst.

Weird little book. Far more psychology than plot. If you want space opera, this is not your book. But if you enjoy the "what the HELL is going on??" feeling, this is definitely your book. If you hated 2001, this can still be your book. I just can't see casting George Clooney for this.

Lonely, eerie and stark, this captivating and simply staged gripping tale of contact with another form of life on an alien planet explores the development of mind from matter and our human experiences of shame, guilt and love are thus captured and analysed in the context of another world. Lem, the materialist, speculates on the communication problems between species and projects a glimpse of an evolving and uncaring infant deity. I realize that this book was translated but I still have to say I didn't like this book. It was long and drawn out. I didn't feel that the odd things happen were never really explained or addressed. I saw the movie and was left with that same feeling of not understanding or knowing what was going on with the people.

I hope this is not an edition based on the poor American remake of Tarkovsky's film based on Lem's novel. If it is please disregard this vote of support for a truly intelligent book as well as well as an original film about the probably most difficult aspects of our lives; the reconciliation between our difficult past and the sometimes even more difficult present. perhaps my favorite fictional work ever. Brilliant, timely (even some 50 years after it was written), and beautiful. A perfect novel of ideas. Magnificent.

This book shows what true love is.
