Disgusting, pitiful, miserable and yet masterful insight of the working class Paris in the 19th century. Anyone who has ever been drunk will be ashamed within oneself to read Zola's portrayal of drunkeness and excesses. Unputdownable and inspires pity for the central characters, Gervais and Lantier.

All the Zola's books are a bit horryfing, but this one is the most depressive and disgusting Zola's book I've read... while reading some parts I was even wishing the book to end finally :D but I have to say that it's impressive :) I hope I'll manage to read it again, in French, one day...
