Again, one of my favorite novels by one of my favorite novelists.

Wharton is one of my favorite, late nineteenth-century writers. I recommend reading her books before visiting the mansions in Newport, RI. Gives you a better sense of the lives that were lived out in those spaces so long ago...

Don't read this one. It's babble.

Reading this book is like watching a train wreck. The main character, Undine Spraggs, finds meaning by climbing the social ladder. She is willing to step on anyone in her way to get there, and destroys lives along her trek. Wharton's characters and writing are so compelling that you can't look away from the devastating trail in Undine's wake.
