a worthy concept of a horrible vision of utopia that is sometimes disturbing and sometimes mundane ... the author brings together a wide assortment of true experiences from around the world and puts them into play in an improbable American society backed by quaint but pseudo-sci-fi references. a good read with a nice ending twist, but i found it offered only superficial, and sometimes...more

This is a sad but captivating tale. I devoured it in a day--unable to do anything else like work on my dissertation maybe. I just couldn't wait to see what happened to the heroine. I tend to get emotionally involved in books and it got me both thinking and feeling. This is why I loved this book. On top of that it is beautifully written. An excellent read!

This book was intense! It was very well written with flashbacks and foreshadowing. Author expertly built tension and suspense that I was a real page turner. Provides much food for thought around woman's rights. How far we've come, how can we strive for even greater equality, control of government in our lives, effects of becoming passive rather than active members who stand up for...more

Didn't really like it. Maybe it was the writing style or the way it kept jumping around from past to present. Or it could have been the tiresome themes. I also didn't care for the abrupt ending. Don't think it deserves classic status and definitley should not be taught in high school; college, maybe.

I was a little frightened of reading this book. I’m not a big fan of dystopian fiction, and I was afraid it was going to be too over-the-top, too unbelievable. But I was pleasantly surprised… While this isn’t particularly a happy story, it was an interesting one. Offred’s world seems unreal to me, but not unbelievable. And I especially liked the open-ended conclusion. ...more

I'm not normally the kind of person who reads these sort of fiction-utopian society books, but it was required for my lit class. I ended up getting really invovled in it, and really enjoyed the way Offred explained herself and her situation. It gave an interesting perspective on a lot of things, and despite the oppressive situation, humor is tucked into the most random of situations.

I just finished reading this book. The more I think about it, the more the story grows on me. I can appreciate the idea of how we can easily become complacent towards oppression when given a little bit of power or freedom. So, maybe next week I will feel differently about this book - we'll see.
