Murakami takes a very different approach with this one. Although it is a bit mainstream, there still is that Murakami touch that makes it something much more. Personally I loved this book. After a few reads, it really grows on you.

I can't express enough how incredible the writing of Murakami is. He manages to take our world and transform it into a land completely different, but we still believe it is ours. After Dark follows the events of various characters as they collide and impact one another one night in Roppongi. Murakami gravitates toward the more lurid aspects of his particular interests yet disposes of the more absurd flourishes. It works more or less but ends up coming off like Murakami trying to write like he's not Murakami.

Good book. It seems that lately Murakami is stepping away from his usual "divorced middle-aged men going through a changing experience" formula, and trying new things. Though he hasn't perfected this change of style yet, this book is still worth a read, if not a purchase.
