Great perspective on the '60's, Nixon, and a great story.

Finished it! This book suffers from the Donnie Darko syndrome: great beginning, great lead up and development, keeps you engaged -- maybe too much! -- and then the ending lets you down. You expect a religious experience when everything falls into place, but all you get is a "huh????'. I have to admit, Palace Council is way less "huh????" than Donnie Darko, but...more

Finished it! This book suffers from the Donnie Darko syndrome: great beginning, great lead up and development, keeps you engaged -- maybe too much! -- and then the ending lets you down. You expect a religious experience when everything falls into place, but all you get is a "huh????'. I have to admit, Palace Council is way less "huh????" than Donnie Darko, but it's still a disappointing end. But, it was engaging up to just before the end. Still better than a lot of other novels I have read. I may read some of Carter's other novels since I enjoyed his prose, and that is sonething I appreciate.   hide

Just started it, only a couple chapters in. I NEED MORE TIME TO READ!

so far it's excellent - literary, accurately historical, suspenseful and peopled with rich, three-dimensional original characters mingling with contemporary famous african americans. i can't put it down!
