After reading this I couldn't really see what more I could have got than searching on the internet. While the author, Pico Iyer has met the Dalai Lama you get no 'new' insight into his character. This book just didn't do it for me.

Explains the context of the Dalai Lama's life more than about him specifically. Easy to get through, though, and the occasional fantastic line.

A heavy book but thought-provoking. Need to know about Tibet real recent history before can appreciate the essence of this book.

The book covers the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan exile community. It was a bit short. I would have liked to have seen more in-depth coverage.

a description of the dalai lama many incarnations, from politician, spiritual leader philosopher (maybe not enough of this aspect), teacher and pupil. written in an easy journalistic style, sometimes there are some repetitions, but I have the sense that there is a very good overall portrait of the dl and his community, both local and global.

This an affecting story both for the singular central character and for the thoughtful presentation of issues surrounding him, global politics, human nature, etc. I left lots of place markers to remind me of particularly incisive moments: for example "a monk is a walking answer."
