This Vietnamese writer is good. I like his style of writing. However, I was up in the air with the short stories that were in this book. It is a some what dark book with not so happy endings. I loved the account of the voyage to Vietnam. It made me appreciate my parents more.

Nam Le is a new astounding talent - I'd rate The Boat, his debut book of short stories as being up with the likes of John Updike, Richard Ford and his WA story is on par with Tim Winton. Get it while its hot.

The Boat was the first fiction book that I have completed since Jasper was born. Its short stories have a common thread of death, which makes it a bit depressing at times, but the talented author grittily captures the culture of a range of cities, from Cartagena to Baghdad to New York.

Some of these stories are really great; a few I couldn't get interested in. Still, it's clear that Le is a very strong writer and this is an impressive debut.
