It gives a good philosophical argument for the human need of "religion" which is equivalent a "spiritual" education. Religion is not about the existence of a God, it is about a spiritual existence and the need for rituals to give meaning to the important steps in life.

A better review if I understood it. I think I agreed with her theme. God is everywhere but nowhere. Is everything but nothing. Read the last fw chapters . If you don't you won't get there

I would agree with the other reviews that Armstrong got bogged down in the history of philosophy in the middle of the book. But I think she did carry her point throughout. Armstrong is phenomenal, i don't think she ever wrote a book that wasn't worth reading, she is one of humanity's good voices in my view, yet i would call this book the case "against" God, even though it's well written and intellegent

Intriguing book written by a former nun about the role of myth in religion. I got about halfway through before I lost interest.

More of a textbook on the history of "god scholarship". Don't expect to get any answers.

This book is not another pedantic rant about whether we can empirically prove the existence of God. Rather, it is an excellent historical account of the changing meaning of the word 'God', and how those definitional changes have affected our view of God im contemporary times. I recommend it to the religious and the atheist alike. For both groups, it will at least help define the terms we use...more

This book is essentially an updated version of Armstrong's earlier title "The History of God". While her argument is admittedly thought provoking, I am less than satisfied with her research methodology; in that she is selective about which sources she uses and in what light she presents them in. One can easily sense her desire to find within the major religions the famed "Perennial Philosophy" -...more
