Despite the disappointing story of the aging witches, John Updike's writing is a joy to read. Few can bring the clarity that he can to character, mood, and place.
I had this book on hold at the library before late January 2009, and received it just days after Updike's demise. I read then, a meditation on aging and death, and wondered if Updike knew of his cancer as he gave the widows health problems. Everyone is unlikable.
