While I enjoyed CARTER BEATS THE DEVIL, Gold's sophomore effort wanders aimlessly, never quite seeming to figure out what it wants to be about.

Gold does an excellent job of weaving together different stories and characters -- Mary Pickford, Charlie Chaplin, and even Rin-Tin-Tin. Loved his previous book (Carter BEats the Devil), but can't say the same for Sunnyside. It was impressive, ambitious, clever, and at times really enjoyable, but I found it never really all came together.
