It's interesting that while reading it I was reminded vaguely of the book "Skipping Christmas" by John Grisham. That book is a light read about a married couple that tries to reject the status quo and vapid commercialism of Christmas, only to realize there is...more

I loved Revolutionary Road but The Easter Parade and Eleven Kinds of Loneliness never came close to the same intensity or depth. 4 stars to RR for it's story and the stark prose. 2-3 stars for the others.

I read all three of these, though in old, out-of-print editions. Revolutionary Road remains his best novel, but Eleven Kinds of Loneliness contains some good short stories. A few of them will remind the reader directly of Revolutionary Road, both in setting, character, and plot. Others are more unique, such as the first story about a small boy's experience of going to a new school.

Out of the lives of Manhattan office workers, a cab driver seeking immortality, frustrated would-be novelists, suburban men and their yearning, neglected women, Richard Yates creates a haunting mosaic of the 1950s, the era when the American dream...more
