Revolutionary Road, The Easter Parade, Eleven Kinds of Loneliness (Everyman's Library (Cloth))

One of the best writers ever.

I had this on my list before I knew it was going to be a movie. Now I am really looking forward to the movie!

Damn you Mr. Yates to hell! How did he know how I would come to feel in a book published 2 years before I was born? It's interesting that while reading it I was reminded vaguely of the book "Skipping Christmas" by John Grisham. That book is a light read about a married couple that tries to reject the status quo and vapid commercialism of Christmas, only to realize there is something lovely in the burbs as friends come to their aid. Revolutionary Road is of course the much more mature and more realistic picture of the "emptiness and hopelessness" of modern life. And rather than a picture perfect ending, this one is tragic. It's interesting that this story is relevant even 48 years after it was published.   hide

I loved Revolutionary Road but The Easter Parade and Eleven Kinds of Loneliness never came close to the same intensity or depth. 4 stars to RR for it's story and the stark prose. 2-3 stars for the others.

You want a grim novel about life in the burbs this is your book.

I read all three of these, though in old, out-of-print editions. Revolutionary Road remains his best novel, but Eleven Kinds of Loneliness contains some good short stories. A few of them will remind the reader directly of Revolutionary Road, both in setting, character, and plot. Others are more unique, such as the first story about a small boy's experience of going to a new school.
