Heard the author on NPR after I had read Purple Hibiscus. I enjoyed most of the stories in this book, some very much so. The author was able to explore different themes and plots, but I still feel she was stronger with the novel (not to say this wasn't very good).

A set of interesting short stories about Nigerians at home and abroad. There is a glimpse into the rot, corruption, injustice and poverty that persist in Nigeria. Adichie also highlights different aspects of the immigrant experience in America, the hope of a life with greater economic possibilities interspersed with the struggle to fit in to a new culture.

I usually don't like short stories, but these were really great. Well written, makes me want to read more by the author.

Not a bad effort overall, although this isn’t a book I’d...more

Read them all in a couple of sittings, wonderful characterisation and stories that linger.

Chimamanda Ngochie is undoubtedly one of the coolest writers to emerge from modern Africa. While she does not deviate much from the lives, joys and sorrows of Nigerians in her third book, it is amazing how one can evoke so many emotions and tell so many stories out of a limited pan. Highly recommended. Also by her - The Purple Hibiscus and Half of a Yellow Sun. Go READ !!

This is a wonderful new writer that is able to narrate a story and comment on Nigerian society, draw parallels with American society and the issues of gender, race, class, income. She is a gifted and refreshing voice on the literary scene.

Each story is captivating and they display the same great writing and depth of characters I expect from Ms. Adichie. I initially thought that these short stories couldn't have the length to deliver the power of Half of a Yellow Sun. I was pleasantly surprised that I was wrong. The intertwining of Igbo language and culture adds so much to each story. I believe I will reread these stories many...more
