I found this a tough collection of short stories by Updike. All so memorable,but dark and bleak,maybe because he knew he was dying at the time,because it certainly shines through. He strives for forgiviness in one,redemption,salvation,self loathing,anger...it is all there,a battle we all face....

There is a lot for the first of us Boomers to identify with in this work. The themes of this collection have to do with aging and impending death. Most of us, in our salad days, rarely considered that we'd have to struggle with adventuresome minds in aging bodies. I'd love to consider my self as aging gracefully. Yet instead I find myself jangling, yet determined, into this new stage.
