I adore this play, a wonderful mesh of well thought characters and disturbing events, the play caters to the innate fear we all have of the family living in the middle of nowhere, with barely any contact to the outside world. Fun to produce/perform, too.

I really dislike this play. I found the way it was written disturbing and the ending creepy yet a bit anticlimactic.

what an amazing piece of writing! sam shepard is definetly one of the greatest playwrites of our time. he creates an intricite cast each member of the cast with a specific purpose. and though it is not seen through the play each ones purpose comes out in the end. buried child becomes an overlapping theme and it becomes not just litteral but figurative as we watch a young man and how he tries to...more
 what an amazing piece of writing! sam shepard is definetly one of the greatest playwrites of our time. he creates an intricite cast each member of the cast with a specific purpose. and though it is not seen through the play each ones purpose comes out in the end. buried child becomes an overlapping theme and it becomes not just litteral but figurative as we watch a young man and how he tries to piece his past back together to find it in shambles and in someplaces non existant. i love american theater and this play reminds me why i do so much!   hide

"Buried Child" shows a different side from what we see from arguably his most well-known play, "True West," and he presents a beautiful story about loss.  A quick read, and a play that should be known by more of the general public.

The first time I read this book, I hated it. However, after a second read, it fought back. A dark, twisted look at the crumbling state of the Norman Rockwell American dream--Buried Child shows the preconceived notion of Americana through a twisted mirror that reflects the ugly and putrid world only Shepard could bring to life.
