Merlin's review is right on the money. Vidal is getting older and naturally is experiencing the loss of friends and family more than ever, so there is more of it in this book. It is an excellent book, just as clever and lively as anything else he's written in the last 20 years. It makes a great audio book for the car; Vidal reads it.

Entertaining, though not up to the level of Palimpsest.

For my money Gore Vidal is one of America’s greatest modern writers, commentators and wits. This work provides an update to Vidal’s autobiography Palimpsest. Although slightly more fragmented than Palimpsest the book has some hilarious and some extremely moving moments. The most poignant moment is the authors account of the death of his long term companion.

I enjoyed this book but it wasn't nearly as insightful or interesting as I thought it could be. Most of the book consists of name-dropping, railing on and on about the Bush Administration, and describing events that took place in his life with very little insight into his thoughts and emotions at the time. Vidal's follow-up to the wonderful 'Palimpsest' is a disappointment. His trademark wit is sparse, and the name-dropping becomes tedious at times. The old master is losing his touch. A shame.

Eclectic rambling at its finest. Recommended for those somewhat familiar with his work. For those not familiar, it would be better to skip this book altogether.

This is the 2nd time I’ve listened and read him. His voice and words captivate me. His wit and observations command my attention. I feel what I call his pedigree…for lack of better word is amazing too…His grandfather was a senator, his father the founder of two airlines…his family and their friends were all the major players of his time….Amelia Earhart, the Roosevelts, politicians,...more
