exquisite. achingly beautiful...I read and reread this short gem.

Beautiful prose!

this book was good when it was clear wat the hell was going on! It jumped around way way to much!

Surpassed this author's 'Beloved' and has become my favorite Toni Morrison book. I read it twice, back to back, because the first time I had to find out quickly what happened, and the second time I read it to really sort out the characters' voices. This book is about being a woman in the 1680's, both 'free' and slave.

Singularly depressing. . . And I often have a hard time with the characters whose voices are more stream of consciousness than standard narrative. But I loved Beloved, and as the book jacket says, this novel could have been the prequel to Beloved.

Beautifully written, but very hard to read, but absolutely worth the effort. Vintage Toni Morrison.

How can a book written so beautifully be so absolutely BORING???
