 In The Rope Walk,Carrie Brown crafts a luminous story of a young girl's coming of age during a crucial summer in New England. On her tenth birthday Alice meets two visitors to her quiet town: Theo, the African American grandson of her father's best friend, and Kenneth, an artist who has come home to convalesce. Theo forms an instant bond with Alice that will indelibly change them both. The pair in turn befriend Kenneth, and decide to build a “rope walk” through the woods for him, allowing to make his way through the outdoor world he has always loved. But their good intentions lead to surprising consequences, and Alice soon learns how different the world of children and adults really are.   less

It was well-written but I kept waiting for something to happen. Even when important events occurred, it was not a big deal -- you could spot them coming long before so there were no surprises.

A rare occurrence -- I quit reading. After 6 weeks and 2 library renewals, I gave up @ page 70. It was beautifully crafted and extremely slow.

This book is this year's "All Iowa Read", so I thought I would give it a try.  I struggled to finish, did not enjoy and wouldn't recommend to anyone.

10 year old Alice grows up in a small town in Vermont. The Narration felt like a adult reflecting on what it would be like to be 10yrs old, rather than a 10yr old narrating. The plot was fun and the characters were rounded. Lots of strong imagery.

I loved this.  It's a 10-year-old girl coming of age story.  Beautifully written, compassionate, moving.  This is the 2009 All Iowa Reads selection.

I definitely liked this book. It was rather sad, but also very sweet. I would definitely re-read it and recommend it to others.

This was the All-Iowa Reads book in 2009. Not much action. I thought this was an odd choice because neither Librarian Jill or I could find an Iowa connection.
