 Winslow's masterpiece.  It's all boiled down to the essentials here: Boone Daniels, the last avatar of rugged individualism struggling to preserve an ethical code in a dirty world; San Diego surfer and beach culture, where eccentricity and camaraderie persevere in post-60s mutation; an unfolding maze of relations and debts; and a fast-paced hardboiled narrative that refuses to dwell on either the beautiful or the sublime.  

If you've dog-eared your copies of Chandler and Hammett and MacDonald and are looking for some fresh pulp - - this is one to get.   hide

Just like the review on the cover states, "it's a good beach/summer read". I'd guess men might enjoy it more than women; not that it's too sexed-up, boozed-up, shot-up or anything - it's just that I didn't suggest it to my wife, but would recommend it to some of my friends who are looking for a 'fast-paced, light read' that will keep their...more

This book stars Boone Daniels, a private eye who'd rather surf than work, and the plot is a lot like a big wave. There's about 200 pages of slow buildup and then 100 pages of cresting excitement as you race for the shoreline. It takes a reader some patience to wade through the set up -- the author has a lot of characters to introduce and a lot of landscape to describe -- but it pays off in a big...more
 This book stars Boone Daniels, a private eye who'd rather surf than work, and the plot is a lot like a big wave. There's about 200 pages of slow buildup and then 100 pages of cresting excitement as you race for the shoreline. It takes a reader some patience to wade through the set up -- the author has a lot of characters to introduce and a lot of landscape to describe -- but it pays off in a big way. That said, I did wish the dialogue had more snap and the detective got to the solution faster. Winslow would go on to write better books, particularly "The Winter of Frankie Machine" and "Savages."   hide
