I guess this novel is part of Ross MacDonald's "Chandler phase." But it's a lot better than a Chandler knockoff. Great atmosphere, metaphors, and humor, plus this book never feels like the author needs to sober up and figure out where the plot's going. Great stuff. Looking forward to reading the rest of these!

I had been wanting to try Ross MacDonald because I enjoy the '50s and '60s LA crime genre. This wan't that great though and I probably won't read any more.
