I read a baseball book every spring. This was my pick for 2009. Good stuff!

Might be good for someone trying to learn the game, but I doubt that many "semi-experts and deeply serious geeks" will find much worth reading in the book.

A decent primer on baseball.  Some interesting trivia is answered here.  Great for baseball newbies, a little light for those who have been watching the game for a long time.

I didn't understand baseball until I read this book (ok, so I still have a lot to learn) but this book made it interesting--I didn't want to put it down. Now when I help the hubby out at the dugout as he coaches our son's little league team, I might actually know what's going on!

What a great summary for someone very unfamiliar with baseball (like myself). I loved the "random facts" chapters at the end, and the chapter on Fielding blew me away, I had no idea the rules were so complex!

As others have said, not sure how helpful it is with "Deeply Serious" baseball fans, but I certainly enjoyed it as a newbie.

Very funny book with helpful guides to baseball slang, rules and plays. I enjoyed it greatly and will keep it for continued reference.

not so sure how that was supposed to be helpful for anyone past the beginner-fan stage--I'm certainly no 'semi-expert' and I learned verrrry little.  Still, a fun read.

This book was alright. I didn't learn much - I knew most of the info discussed and most of the slang. It could have been a lot funnier, which is what I expected. Not terrible, but not great. Nice appendix listing all the important single season and career records. That will be nice to reference when I'm curious. Probably would be good for someone who didn't know a lot about...more
