you will never see the low county of south carolina the same way. having worked with mentally ill people and with juvenille offenders from this area of the county, this book gave me great insight in the area of social work and mental health. every casework needs to read this book.

This is a must read to learn how the Juvenile Justice System failed. Wille Bosket was a good kid in my opinion but took too many wrong turn to do something right.

This should be required reading, if not in high school, then in college history courses.

This is one of the best books i've ever read. It follows a family from slave times to the current, and you understand more why violence is such a problem in our country. excellent book.

Great read. The research was amazing. I think people who enjoy non-fiction and fiction will find something beneficial in this book.

Good study on the american roots of violence. also a sociological study of institutional changes made by prisoners. I believe that this documents a drastic turn in prisoner relations.

Great description of one family and how a culture of violence begins in the antebellum rural south and comes to the modern the black urban north. Also begs the question of just what do you do with a kid who is really really bad.

Amazingly the art therapist kept in her possession the therapeutic artwork of one of the forebears of the main subject of the book. Since 1945!
