I thought this was a fine piece of historical fiction. It is full of triumph, tragedy, romance, and intrigue. It did take me some time to get comfortable with it. You're almost immediately introduced to this large cast of characters, and it takes a while to remember who is who and how they relate to the story.Alice is quite the complex character. You want to like her, because it's through her eyes that you see most things, but Koen makes her hard to like. Alice is intelligent, devious, and incredibly selfish, and pulls the strings of most that she meets. It is nice to see her grow towards the end of the story, but unfortunate that it takes tragedy for it to happen. There's a lot of loose ends when the book finishes, I'm curious to see they are ever resolved.   hide

I love historical fiction, so I'm biased, but I loved it. Very accurate in its historical portrayal, and still very entertaining.

Absolutely one of the best I have read. Having said that the prequel and sequel Now Face to Face and Thru a Glass Darkly are even better. It is one series I wish wouldn't end. Absolutely loved it. It has gotten me so interested in English history that a trip to England begins Sept 15/08

The author made it very easy to imagine in my head what things must look and feel like in 17th century England. An excellent read, I couldn't put it down, even though it's not one of my typical genres.

It's taking me forever to read it - too many "life" interruptions! I'm sure I'd enjoy more if I could just sit and read straight through, but still good reading!

i love this book! i cannot say enough to praise it! great plot, very realistic, stays true to time period. has romance, mystery, and action-everything a reader could want!

I must admit, it is kind of boring. doesn't seem to be going anywhere.
