One of those books I think everyone should read. It really soured me not only on the administration, but the military leadership which was so gutless. We had Osama in our sights and didn't want to seal off the passes. The troops were there. 10th Mountain was there and Tommy Franks didn't have the stones to commit. Shameful.

You can see why no one really likes the people who run the CIA. That said, it would be hard to run a spy agency when you actually don't have any spies in the field.

Gary Berntsen is a true hero and patriot. Anyone interested in the 2001 invasion of Afghanistan must read this book.

A great book if you wanted to know how we went into Afghanistan and the early victorys of the Afghan War...It also tells the tragic mistake that allowed Al-Qaeda and the Taliban slip away into Pakistan...Why has the war lasted almost 9 years read this book to find out.

Incredible book about the first few months in Afghanistan. Its amazing how just a handful of American troops, the CIA and massive airpower decimated the Taliban and Al Qaeda. Talks alot about how Gary Berntsen worked with some of the rebel fighters, warlords and Hamid Karzi. Very good book.

The story of the senior on-ground CIA field commander during the Taliban fall in Nov-Dec 2001. Great story of bold men doing what it takes to defend this nation -- ie, killing bad guys. Relays how George Tenet and the Clinton administration set the CIA up for failure.

Exciting book but poorly written. Still, great history here. One note is that the guy is obviously disgruntled, which makes me question his objectivity at times. He also tries to gloat as a leader and badass, which are things that should just speak for themselves if you tell the story. But, I'd recommend it.

Read "Ghost Wars" first then... "First In" by Gary Schroen before reading this book. Also... read "Horse Soldiers", then "Kill Bin ladin". These books combined will give you a decent picture of what went on pre 9/11 and during those months after 9/11. Follow it up with "Decent into Chaos".
