A little frustrating. Great material. Great insight into a totally different society and penal/judicial system. Horrible writer. His Japanese colleagues continually told him what a terrible writer he is and I agree. Only Adelstein could make a salacious sex industry and BJs boring. It could have been and should have been a great book but the dry writing style made it merely mediocre.

Funny and gritty look at the Japanese underworld from an American (yet insider) perspective.

Adelstein's narrative from his experience working as a reporter for Yomiuri, the New York Times of Japan, is riveting and funny. Having lived in Japan, I can relate to some of my "gaijin" experience with the author. I recommend this book to all my friends that have resided there. It really gives an insight on the underworld of such a unique country!

This is interesting as a first hand account of a foreigner in Japan who, being a Japanese speaking Jewish American, can play both the Gaijin card and the 'Japanese' card given his background and education. Without these, I don't think anyone else could have brought us such an interesting angle on being a reporter in Japan. I enjoyed the writing style and dry sense of humor from Jake Adelstein....more

This was a great book. I live in the Saitama area very close to where Adelstein first became a crime newspaper reporter. I've seen the Yakuza in my local neighbourhood. It was an interesting insight to the crime syndicate and policing in Japan. I could compare it to policing in Australia, where I was a Cop. My personal opinion, Japanese Police are behind the times of policing.............

A fascinating look at the professional life of an american reporter in Tokyo. This book deals in depth with the Japanese mafia who are known as Yakuza. I became fascinated with this subculture years ago when I became a fan of the films of Juzo Itami (Tampopo etc.) where Yakuza were prominently featured. The side of Japanese society that this book deals with is not for the squeamish or faint of...more

Very good book, putting aside my Japanese language lack of knowledge it was a easy read, interesting, informative and hard to read in some parts. Recommended. Some pictures, an index and glosary would be nice although I can understand why they are not present. It was funny in some parts too.
