This was the first Henning Mankell book that I read and I was hooked not only because he is a superb writer, but a winning story teller. You are drawn in and find that you don't want the book to end but have to find out how it concludes. I am just happy he is such a prolific writer. The most recent of his that I've read. . creepy and great. HM runs a Memory Project for AIDS orphans in Maputo, and yet he depicts the self-obsessed so amazingly well.

This book is totally mesmerising - it draws you in and completely envelopes you, despite the fact that I still can't put my finger on why that is. The subject and content is bleak. The title is entirely appropriate, paralleling the main character's profession (depth sounder) and the examination of the depths of his nature.
