No-one writes better in English than Joseph Conrad, even though it wasn't his native language. This isn't one of his major novels, but there is never a wrong note. Stylish, engrossing, just the right touch and duration. Pure reading pleasure!

I can see O'Neill's inspiration although more developed.

At the end of this book Conrad remarks that it is often misinterpreted as a story about the supernatural. Based on Conrad's first command at sea in the Far East, and the multiple challenges faced in voyage from Bangkok to Singapore. The ingredients for successful command at sea: a well built ship, a few good courageous and professional men (or women)to carry the majority, and a bit of luck, remains essentially unchanged today!
