A must read for anyone who has worked with or knows someone on the Autism spectrum.

Having spent time around John Robison and seeing first hand the behaviors he talks about I thought the book was exactly him. To discover the reason why he is a little different in social situations was enlightening. I especially enjoyed knowing he designed guitars for KISS. I hadn't known that during the time I knew him, only his love of trains, photography and high end autos. I...more

His story is very touching. Definitely a book I felt compelled to read, and couldn't wait to get back to when I had to stop reading for whatever reason. The chapters don't always transition easily (or maybe I should say expectedly) from one topic to another, but the stories and insights being offered counter that minor issue. Thorough, and at the end of the book there's a list of resources...more

I was very touched by the chapter where John Elder becomes a father. This book is a fantastic tale of living with Aspergers. The author candidly recalls life from early childhood through adulthood. His ingenious use of his savant like skills in engineering lead him to diverse jobs working as a sound and special effects engineer for the band Kiss. He then finds work in R and D for electronic...more

Excellent book about a man who grew up in a time not so long ago, when Autism was not widely disgnosed much less Aspergers. The author really lets you into his mind and what he describes you experience. All in all a very satisfying read that leaves lots of questions to be answered in the coming years.

This book is not only very-well written and humorous, but it also changes your perspective on Asperger's and relating to people....and reminds you that there is a little Asperger's in all (or many) of us :) John Elder Robison is definitely a dude I'd like to meet. I mean, he made smoking guitars for Kiss! He makes me laugh and also makes me remember the difficulties of life, especially for...more

A fascinating book on Asperger's from inside. Quite an eye-opener. (Excuse the pun...)

This book was great, especially if you've read Augusten Burrough's books (Running with Scissors); however, near the end it just became a list of events. what's gonna happen when Aspergers is removed from the DSM?

As I have Asperger's, this truly wonderful new book by John Elder Robison has given me a lot of hope and insight. I have identified with his hurts, fears and struggles throughout much of this book. It was so moving, many times it almost brought me to tears. Not all tears of pain, but some tears of understanding, because I felt this sudden kinship with John, that here is someone who has...more
