The series of short stories tied together by music included a couple that had a repeated character, and I found those most interesting, the first story describing a heartbreaking end of a relationship and the second describing a humorous interlude during recovery from plastic surgery. The other stories were also good. I listened to this on audio, and found the narration, with different narrators...more

Subtle and naturalistic, like having a series of fascinating house guests sit with you and tell you their stories. I loved it.

5 short stories. I bet one or two of them will stick with me, and I will return to the book to reread them again. Beautifully crafted.

I don't particularly like the way Ishiguro writes, but the plots of his stories are absolutely mind-blowing. He's able to build a plot in between curious people's lives. But most of all, he's perfectly able to use every single detail of the story to mean something, to add something interesting to the plot. Really enjoyable book, filled up with 5 great stories everybody's going to love.

Ishiguro writes with a kind of stillness and reticence that, personally-speaking, makes it hard for me to warm to him. Nonetheless, he captures the incipient poignancy, quiet desperation and human disappointments in each of the 5 stories that make up this compendium. His quiet empathy shows in the way the heart and memory bears the travails of time's passage.
