If this book was half as long with half as many characters it would have been great. Instead it was a tough slog.

For a lover of the literature and art of the late Victorian/Edwardian Ages, this book is a must read. The story rewards and disappoints in a very life-like way, and is not overly compelling. What I loved is the art history lesson woven throughout the book. Had the story charmed me as much as the "text book" I would have given this book another star. rambling overly long novel. it might have been interesting at half it's length, that i could never quite give up on in hopes it would come together. while the last 50 pages were better than much of the rest of the book, they didn't make up for the slog of the first 651 pages. that said, i didn't hate it as I wouldn't have finished 701 pages if i did, but am sure that i liked it less than any...more
