Ok, the inner flap on my hardback starts out like this: In 1987, an IRA bomb buried Gordon Wilson and his twenty-year-old daughter beneath five feet of rubble. Gordon alone survived. And forgave. It was insightful and it made me ponder a few items in my life and how I can use grace more in my life.

if you are a Christian read this book, if you are a non believer read this book, anyone and everyone needs to read this book! the author talks about the greatest word in the universe, Grace, which is God's love free given to the unmerited, undeserved , and is unfair. one of the best books I have ever read! Must read!

One of the best books on the Christian life I've ever read. Yancey is a treasure trove of illustrations and poignant applications for everyday life. This isn't a light book, in that it challenges our hearts to understand what it means to live out of the love God has offered us. The book is not light because grace is not light. He argues that grace is the distinctive of the Christian that no other religion or worldview offers. Some will get upset by it, but grace is quite upsetting. Jesus' stories of grace were also terribly upsetting, the Prodigal's Son as one example. We love it when we're given it. The challenge is passing it on. Yancey is not afraid to challenge the church and downright take it to task at times. This is a book I recommend all Christians read. If we would truly understand grace, in its depth, not its shallowness, the world would be changed.   hide

It's a pretty good book. Filled with interesting anecdotes. Although it might not be obvious but Yancey does not attempt to answer his book's title question overtly through theological and biblical study but by talking about situations that he feels help to reveal some aspect of Grace in general. If you are looking for a great book on the grace of God as displayed through Christ's sacrifice you may want to look elsewhere. I'm not a fan of Yancey's writing style. okay...I read most of it. I couldn't finish it. Yancey's writing style just irrated me. It felt like "let's argue for arguement sake."
