The Hours

The Hours is both an homage to Virginia Woolf and very much its own creature. Even as Michael Cunningham brings his literary idol back to life, he...more

Like some of the books I have read, The Hours was picked up after seeing (and not comprehending) the motion picture. But this book, flowy as it is, as disjointed and random as the thoughts were- somehow, upon gradual reading, they became so clear. The emphasis on observation and details particularly attracted and inspired me, and so did the prose of thought-process.

For the non-Woolf reader, this can be a stepping-stone to becoming one, or it can just be a wonderful and fulfilling read. On the other hand, if you ARE a Virginia Woolf buff, and you haven't read this novel, you really should. On top of being interesting and well-written on its own, there are whole dimensions that you'll be privy too that the average reader won't be. There are references to...more

I have this book on my re-read list. I am re-reading Lady Chatterly. This will be next. The scene when 2 of the 3 sets go back to their childhood tryst site at the lake is one of my favs of all time.

A work of genius, detailing the lives of three women in one day, Virginia Wolf would be proud. I saw the movie first, and I'm not sure which one is better, but I think they both will stand the test of time. A novel that makes you think about your life and the day to day things that you do and why you do them. Of life and death and why we live. Great Read

I have both read the book and seen the movie and I have to say it's one of the most seminal books on my shelf and most watched dvd's in my collection. 'The Hours' portrays the lives of three women living in different eras and places, shifting effortlessly from Modern day New York to modernist England and then to post-war suburban America. The women all share something in common, the novel 'Mrs...more

I started reading this several years ago before the movie came out, but couldn't get past the first chapter because I always tried to read it before bed and it was too dark and depressing...so a few years ago, I picked it up again and dove into it completely. It's definitely the most captivating book I've ever read. I woke up in the middle of the night near the end of the book and realized the...more

The quote within my facebook profile is from this book... it rocks!! Conversely, the movie was not nearly as good. The quote in my profile might seem alittle morbidly depressing upon first glance however, it lends itself more to the idea that if you don't grasp hold of every amazing oppurtunity in your life... that they might stop coming to you. Or, you might end up unhappy... surrounded by...more
