VERY interesting, especially the chapter about New York. Although it was interesting, I felt Alan spent more time explaining background than telling us what the world would really be without us. The format was basically; write ten pages of background, here's two paragraphs about the topic without human existence. The chapters about the effects of plastic and oil alone are worth picking...more

What would happen to the world if, sometime in the immediate future, without a catastrophe that damaged the planet, every human on Earth were to disappear? This is the premise of The World Without Us, which explores the effect of man's absence across the the world: the swift disintegration of homes and cities, the long-lasting effects of pollution and plastic, the health and death of flora...more

Such a subject could so easily turn into a finger-wagging cautionary tale guaranteed to give you grisly dreams, but the author actually manages to tell a really interesting tale of the world, how it was before us and how it might be after us. Instead of instilling us with guilt he seems to be goading us into action now to make Earth something special again despite our continued existence here. ...more

Given the burgeoning human population and the phenomenal reach of our technologies, humankind has literally become a force of nature. We are inadvertently changing the climate; altering, polluting, and eradicating ecosystems; and driving evolution as other organisms struggle to adapt to a new human-made world. So what would happen if humankind suddenly vanished? Journalist Weisman, author of Echo...more

The World Without Us ( 2007) by Alan Weisman is a book length exploration of what the earth would be like without human beings. Long story short, a whole lot better off. Weisman investigates the question by recreating what the world was like without humans, what has happened since our evolution and spread, vignettes of places that humans have abandoned for one reason or another, and theorizing...more

The book unfortunately digresses into what the problems are in today's world due to pollution. Each section after the first few chapters only briefly describes what the world would be like. The most interesting chapters are at the beginning when he describes how long it will take for nature to completely destroy our concrete jungles.

There are numerous well written reviews available, you should refer to those for more details of the content of the book. I came away with one humbling realization, that effectively all traces of the human race's existance would disappear in hundred's to tens of thousands of years. The longer standing testiments to our presence are due to structures made thousands of years a go. It...more

As I continue to read this book, I am equally intrigued and frustrated. The hype on it, as the name suggests, was all about how the world would reclaim humanity's presence and structures. This type of "apocalytic" speculation - whether in non- or sci-fiction - intrigues me, and The World Without Us provides a bit of this. But it is equally heavy in its explanations of past examples that seem to...more

This book is so much more than what I picked up from the TV specials. There is a tremendous amount of nature going on and the book discusses the environment from many different angles. Also it gives me greater appreciation of all those maintenance crews that work on our highways and bridges.

A very interesting concept about what would happen if (when?) humans cease to exist and the dam-collapsing, city-rotting, nuclear nightmare that would ensue. He makes some very persuasive arguments, but my goodness, he labours a point. I ground to a halt before the end sobbing "Alan, Alan, my love, I get it. We're dreadful and the world is fooked. I get it". Still worth a skim - but you...more
