more This book is the first in a series about Marcus Didius Falco, an informant in city of Rome during the reign of Vespasian. I must admit that when I started to read this book, I didn't really know what to expect from it, except for some sort of detective story placed in Imperial Rome. And of course it is a detective story and a very good one at that. So if that's what you're looking for, it is a fascinating read based solely on its plot.Thing that made this book one of my new favourites is however Lindsey Davis writing stile - it's very witty, intelligent and feels right for the period. Also, she manages quite wellto place the reader in the period, without being overly "historical". Most important however is the fact that she makes reader really care for and like the characters in the book. They have quite unique humor, very human flaws and the more I read about them, the more I want to know about them and their fate.
