Marked (House of Night Novel)

I have been reading more YA books lately, hoping that they will be less Adult (skin and language). Boy this is a shock to the system. I so wish that books could be rated. This book, if turned into a movie, would be R. By page six, it says the F bomb twice and on page 60 it starts going on about seeing oral sex on some guy. It really makes me sad to see that this series seems to do so well...more

It really makes me sad to see that this series seems to do so well in the book stores. This book is absolutley discusting filth! I started reading YA thinking that it would be safer that adult fiction. I am not a fan of language and skin. This book, if it had a rating, would be R nothing less. THe first 6 pages has the f bomb twice. It talks about Religion as bad and makes fun of faith, it talks about oral sex, and I stopped reading after page 60. Who knows what other filth is in that book. The sad part is that it has 3 books in the series after it, and they have done very whll at book stores. If I could give it a negative star I would!   hide

This is a good start to (hopefully) a good series...the writing could have been a bit better. Some of the "kid" speech contradicted itself...sometimes trying too hard to sound like teenagers, I think. I hope that will improve with the next book. I do love the fact that the Cast ladies took Wiccan themed Goddess worship and ritual...basically they took out the word Wiccan and...more

This is a good start to (hopefully) a good series...the writing could have been a bit better. I bought Marked because if seemed interesting. When I first started reading it, it seemed a bit silly. I convinced myself to keep reading because I had paid to read it, and I found myself to keep going. It reminds me off Harry Potter meets Twilight..Vampires that go to vamp school. Excuse me...Vampyres. :P The only complain I have about this book is that everything seems to happen so fast. Zoey is "marked", goes to vamp school, makes a best friend, and gets the "hottest guy" at school, learns she can control the elements and is appointed present of the dark daughters in like a few months..By few I mean like 3. I think it could have stretched over a lot longer than that. Other than the speed the story evolves, it was very interesting.   hide

When i started this book i wasn't too sure what it would be like. I've never read anything by a mother-daughter team so i was expecting something new. In the beginning there were parts that were somewhat corny, just like how they wrote that certain celebrities were vampires which i just found a bit weird but thats only me. All in all though, as the story progressed it actually turned into a great read and i can't wait to buy the next one. As soon as I finished the book I gave it to my friend to borrow and she read it in just a day so i guess she agrees with my opinion. Yes there are some stereotypical comments in there but it doesn't necessarily mean that thats what they, the authors, think. Of course it usually is what the authors think but lots of people stereotype against stuff like that and it isn't just to be shoved aside, i understand that. But I'm sure that some people have to agree with me that it was a pretty good novel, with or without(i prefer) stereotypes. =] good so far.maybe a bit cornyIS ACTUALLY REALLY GOOD!   hide

After I read the Twilight series I didn't think any vamp series will hook me, but this one did, it is really good and different then Twilight, it is more close to the old vampires stories, like they awake at night and sleep through the day, the drink blood and enjoy it, but what is differnet that they eat too and sleep! whenever one of them did something good or has a strange ability he gets beside the mark a beautiful tatoo in his forhead and maybe shoulders! before turning into a vampire you should go throught stages for four years and then you won't die! it is very cool!   hide

I picked up the book because i was intrigued by the cover, however, after reading the first few pages i was a bit disappointed. The swearing and insults put me off. I carried on reading and slowly got more interested. Overall, the story seems predictable and clichéd like the hot guy falling for the main character and the popular girl in school is blonde and has a posse of wannabes. I definitely won't continue with the House of Night series and I'll probably sell my copy. I guess once you've read Twilight, this book will seem pretty dull.   hide

And the book itself seems almost anti-Christian, where the "People of Faith" (obviously the Christians) are almost mocked upon by the vampire community (obviously very wiccan-ish). And the book itself seems almost anti-Christian, where the "People of Faith" (obviously the Christians) are almost mocked upon by the vampire community (obviously very wiccan-ish). It's almost unsettling. The men have practically no authority in their community, where the Goddess is the all-powerful. It's just too... icky. It makes the story feel so fake and like a really badly-scripted movie. The plot does not seem at all original (even copying off some of the books it even mentions itself). The characters are not believable. The only thing that truly kept me reading is the fact that Aphrodite (and seriously, I don't even think a vampire would pick that name...) is a bitch and something has to be done about it. And Zoey, the main character, really needs to get a grip on reality...   hide

Any uber hormonal teenager want to buy it from me? I bought it because I found the cover to be rather gorgeous. Also, it was on sale. I hardly ever turn down a book so I read it and found that I had finally gotten over teeny-bopper books! Glory Glory Hallelujah! Maybe if you're a hormonal teenager you'll find this series to be more appealing. Did not like the slang. Did not like the characters. Did not like the plot. Kind of liked that they fused a little Native American culture in there (of course I'm no NA aficionado so they could all be made up Native American stories).   hide
