His fiction is exquisite. His ability to create characters from the inside out is utterly insane. His essays however, tend to be offputtingly contentious and somehow come off as prudish. Their subject matter, however, and his deep knowledge of it is unquestionably captivating.

Nice stories on the birth of the semiconductor industry and tv production and how it shapes social thinking. He is very insightful about the influence of culture in society; I particularly liked his perspective on movies Vs novels, where the novels are yet to move away from old-Europe intellectualism and into the more journalistic style of movies, found in Zola. But the last 50 pages I was dragging my feet with his fill-the-gap story about what he was up to in the 60s. Nice stories about the semiconductor industry and the TV production but I fear he ran out of ideas for the last 50 pages and just told what he was up to in the 60s! Maybe he is a little fond of himself too, but it doesn't surprise me as anyone in his position would.   hide

Except for the last articles about "The New Yorker", this is a really entertained book. A good glance to what defines American society (an Western civilization in general) at the end of the past century.

Aside from the essay on Silicone valley's Midwest roots, I found this book to be boring and was glad to see the end of it. The title is misleading as it is only one brief essay. Wolfe's description of casual sex is as interesting as raking leaves. Almost a complete waste of time.

Graat essays by the master of acute social observations. Particularly of interest was his essay 'Two Young Men Went West' - really the story of how Silicon Valley came to be.

Tom's three stooges make me laugh. So do the Tiny Mummies.
