Helt fabelaktig bok om russisk kulturhistorie, klarte ikke å legge den fra meg. Glem hjernedød påskekrim, les heller denne og lær om den russiske kulturarven..

Excellent history book describing the Russian people and the development of their national identity. Chronicles the evolution of the arts, noble/peasant relations, their history of dissent, among other things. Overall paints a good portrait about what it means to be Russian.

Highly recommended. I loved the chapter on the origins of Russian music, from Rimsky-Korsakoff through Tchaikovsky, Stravinsky and Prokofieff in the folkloric traditions of Gusli playing and in the polyphonic sounds of Russian Orthodox church choral music. The chapter on the Akhmatova and the Stalin era is wonderful as well --but tragic.

The best history book I have ever read, Figes has the mastery of a great novelist without losing his credibility as a historian.

"Identity" is fashionable term these days. But it is not more meaningful unless one can show how it manifests itself in social interaction and behvaiour. Natasha's Dance is an interpretation of Russian cultural identity with seperate strands in each chapter, taken from French invasion in 1812 (European Russia) to "Brezhnev era". You will love reading it

Very well written. Cannot believe that the author is not Russian. He made me undestand things that I couldnt' quite put together before. Would highly recommend to anyone who wants to understand Russia and its cultural history in particular.
