I had been hearing about this book for a long time and finally got to read it. This is one amazing book and worthy of the Pulitzer prize. Eugenides is certainly a gifted writer and his overwhelming attention to detail is what sets this book apart from market full of racing, page-turners. What's really awsome about the book is that Euginides could've started with his story right off the bat but he went through the trouble to weave 80 years of his family history in an exquisite kaleidescope and covered pretty much every piece of history in it. Because of the author's background, I guess this novel has reached to a much wider audience and has transcended gender and race to bring together this great novel. Highly recommended.   hide

Very original idea. Great insight into the mind of a person who find themselves between sexes. Not so easy to follow though. His stile is a bit difficult at times. Great read, will definitely make you think.

All in all this book was good, not excellent nor great simply good. The plot didn't stay focus it jumped way too much around to focus on things that didn't matter. I read the book two years ago and it earned the respect that i gave it. Now that Oprah has added it to her book club I take back all the respect i gave it. Although the sales of this book probably has gone up at least fourty...more

Although the sales of this book probably has gone up at least fourty percent, it's all for the wrong reasons. Oprah shouldn't have a book club and I stand firm in that belief. If one is looking for proof look no farther then "Their Eyes Were Watching God." She took a very excellent book and turned it into a very bad movie that reflected close to none of the orginal message Zora Huston had in the orginal book. With "Middlesex" now in the the cult of Oprah readers I take back my respect for "Middlesex" and now considered it trash.   hide

I heard a lot of people review this book in a kind of 'love to hate you' sort of way, blaming the mainstream effects of Oprah's Book Club and etc.. others told me that after a certain point when the story shifted from the Grandmother to the narrator it became less interesting... I found it unbelievably addicting, amazingly descriptive, and very honest in a way that made me almost uncomfortable at points; proud to have someone from the same cultural backdrop as myself speak of previously ignored periods in history and make them more alive; opening the readers eyes to the Immigrant American way that many of our parents/grandparents came from and had lived through but were very rarely able to explain with such blatant purity and uprightness. This is my absolute favorite book. I cannot imagine what it must have taken Eugenides to pour his heart and soul into the imaginative and everlasting tale of a young person finding their way in the world. I could not put the book down and was devastated when there was nothing left to read. What an incredible story of multiple generations of one family blending with the riotous histories of the cities they lived in, and the secrets each member of the family held so close to them out of fear and shame. This is an amazing book all around. Amazing amazing book. Though I admit that it was a bit slow to get into, it truly was one of those books that is well worth the read. It was such an eye opening to experience to see the ways in which gender negotiates with one's life. I read this book just a few months ago and already want to pick it up again to see what little details I didn't catch the first time around. I would recommend it to anyone who wanted to read a powerful piece of fiction that would move them.   hide

Whenever this book comes up in conversation I always say how much I loved it...and I get so annoyed when people's first responce is that is' gross or creepy. Yes, it's about a hermaphrodite...yes, there is a story of family incest...but that's not the point. At least not to me. it took me a while to warm up to this one, but once i did i was engrossed. this book has a delicious ironic flavor that is refreshing in a coming of age narrative. it almost seemed like a parody of the now traditional approach to memoir. this 1st person tale expands from being the story of one individual, to being the story of several generations. there is also a rich assortment of historic details from old detroit(from which i hail) that i couldn't get enough of. the sensational facts of the narrator's sexual organs are actually secondary to the interesting and many layered tale of the secrets, compromises and deceits family members inflict on each other.   hide

I love this author- he is amazing. Excellent book.
