Quite simply one of the best reads of the year. A Middle American family saga, superbly executed with a great plot, memorable characters and more than one or two 'gulp' moments. Highly recommended.

I had already loved The Corrections and I really enjoyed this one. I wish we had more authors like that in France, some who are able to write modern realistic romans-fleuves.

Wow, This book is a long drawn out whine! What a bunch of middle class, superficial, passive aggresive individuals. I can't remember when I could not relate with even one character in a book. I read it after seeing a couple reviews from people who have similar reading interests. Big disappointment. Kept waitng for the "aha" moment. Didn't happen. Oh it has it's moments, just sort of bleh.

Freedom to be who you are if you're true to yourself. Very American...more

really enjoyed the intricacies of the relationships in this book, even though i had to plow through some of the sections knee-deep in conservation talk.
