This was one of the most disturbing books I have read. It shows how far people will go to make money. Truly dispicable! 

Dan Simmons is a great writer. Throughout this book everything came alive, as if I was actually there in Calcutta.

Omg!! A total blood and gore overload, but intriguing, wish Dan Simmons had tied up some of the loose ends though.

Very creepy. Dan Simmons is an amazingly versatile writer. Although I've never been to Calcutta, and therefore can't necessarily vouch for the accuracy of the portrayal, the book gave me a very clear sense of the place.

I would call it more of a crime thriller really than a horror story, though there are the supernatural pieces. It offers a vivid description of  Calcutta in the late 70s which is very recognizable and uncannily accurate.
It is called a Horror book; actually it is a crime thriller set in a mystic, Indian setting.

Suggested to me by hubby. He was right...it was awesome. Vivid descriptions of Calcutta. Errie as hell. And who doesn't admire the goddess Kali? She works her magic on the protagonist and he is forever changed.
