 In most thrillers, "hardware" consists of big guns, airplanes, military vehicles, and weapons that make things explode. Dan Brown has written a thriller for those of us who like our hardware with disc drives and who rate our heroes by big brainpower rather than big firepower. It's an Internet user's spy novel where the good guys and bad guys struggle over secrets somewhat more intellectual than just where the secret formula is hidden--they have to gain understanding of what the secret formula actually is. In this case, the secret formula is a new means of encryption, capable of changing the balance of international power. Part of the fun is that the book takes the reader along into an understanding of encryption technologies. You'll find yourself better understanding the political battles over such real-life technologies as the Clipper Chip and PGP (Pretty Good Privacy) software even though the book looks at the issues through the eyes of fiction. Although there's enough globehopping in this book for James Bond, the real battleground is cyberspace, because that's where the "bomb" (or rather, the new encryption algorithm) will explode. Yes, there are a few flaws in the plot if you look too closely, but the cleverness and the sheer fun of it all more than make up for them. There are enough twists and turns to keep you guessing and a lot of high, gee-whiz-level information about encryption, code breaking, and the role they play in international politics. Set aside the whole afternoon and evening for it and have finger food on hand for supper--you may want to read this one straight through.   less

Programming, cryptography, network security - if you happen to have any idea what these(or plan to have at some later point in time), this book is NOT FOR YOU. Stay away from this book, as far as possible - because the author's idea about these words are probably limited to that provided by a standard dictionary. Little knowledge is a dangerous thing, and if you add a little Hollywood to it -...more
 Programming, cryptography, network security - if you happen to have any idea what these(or plan to have at some later point in time), this book is NOT FOR YOU. Stay away from this book, as far as possible - because the author's idea about these words are probably limited to that provided by a standard dictionary. Little knowledge is a dangerous thing, and if you add a little Hollywood to it - the results can be detrimental. He somehow overheard a few drunk college grads at some bar talking about cryptography after their first class - and went home and saw a late night cheap spy thriller. Next morning when he woke up, he had started writing the most pathetic book I have read in recent times.   hide

Dan Brown is quickly becoming a fave author. I've never really read any cyber-thrillers either, but this one kept my attention. The action was great, and being a bookkeeper, I loved all the math about it. I'm far from being a mathematition (hmm, did I spell that right? It doesn't look right.), but I enjoyed the book just the same. Each character had their own personalities, and flaws to go with...more

I hated him for what he did to David, all in the name of covering said ass. And I was so proud of David in the end, and Susan too. Yep, enjoyed it thoroughly.   hide

As usual Dan Brown's thrilling action sequences, fluid imagery, and enticing character development make for an entertaining story.  However, I was... disappointed in this one.  My disappointment stems purely from the fact that I know too much about the factual topics he is playing with, which crumbles his storyline and allows me to see right through it.  As usual Dan Brown's thrilling action sequences, fluid imagery, and enticing character development make for an entertaining story.  However, I was... disappointed in this one.  My disappointment stems purely from the fact that I know too much about the factual topics he is playing with, which crumbles his storyline and allows me to see right through it.  Normally I can blur my knowledge and flow with the plot, pull myself into the story.  This time, there was no chance.  The second he introduced his morphing unbreakable  code I knew I was not apart of the audience this book was written for, and it was all down hill from there.  I do enjoy his writing style though, so I think I'll hand this book off to my grandmother (who recently learned excitedly how to turn a computer on) and pick up something a little more intellectually challenging.

PS what was up with the ridiculous amount of time it took them to solve the riddle at the end?  I know science and engineering majors sleep through basic chem but COME ON!!!  

PPS  It really annoyed me that Jabba kept yelling about a numerical code at the end... Anyone of his supposed education wouldn't be phased by a linguistic code that needed to become numerical... *rolls eyes*   hide

Not my favorite book by Dan Brown. I have enjoyed his others (though I haven't finished The Lost Symbol yet!) but this book was a disappointment to me. For some reason, I just could not get into the characters or "buy" the storyline. I kept the book only so I would have all of his. His other books I will probably re-read. This one will likely remain on the shelf collecting dust bunnies. :)

An extremely boring book I'm reading, but I just have to... It's unrealistic, contains mathematically flawed theory supporting what the story is about, it's fun to read something about codebreaking written by a noob for a few minutes and then get back to the real world where the laws of information theory still apply. In the real world a code is unbreakable because it's too complex to break, not because it's impossible to break, meaning it's unlikely to be broken but still possible. Unfortunately the book isn't about a complex problem, it's about an impossible problem, which is where Dan Brown's crackpot science logic starts. It would have been cooler if it were about some high complexity problem that has to be solved or the world will come to an end by nuclear self destruction because some bastards created selfdetonating atom bombs with sophisticated codes, but instead it's about an algorithm that can't exist. Maybe fiction just isn't my thing...   hide

Typical Dan Brown, it is full of suspense and is very well researched. The plot is pretty stirring and it kept me guessing for quite a while although it didn't take to long to figure out who the bad guy was. If we could rate with half stars I probably would have given it 3 1/2 but its definitely better than a 3. Its a pretty quick read and I imagine it would make a good film (they definitely...more

Its a pretty quick read and I imagine it would make a good film (they definitely knicked a few bits for Die Hard 4.0) and once you have read it look out for the code on the last page - for those who are curious the numbers shown represent the chapters in the book, take the 1st letter on each page and you end up with 32 characters. Put the characters into a Caeser Square nad you will find the answer - Nice touch.   hide

Why is it that we read the words 'That guy can't be the villian, everyone knows he's the bestest good guy there ever was', take a guess the subject is probably the villian, and be right?! And Jessica and Matt are right, the technical side of it makes Star Trek sound like an educational program. Not to mention the absolutely disgusting style and language used. My advice to you Danny boy: go back to school, and pass those English courses you seemed to have scraped through. Then write a book in a style that suggests you're a bit older, i.e. above 12.   hide
