Stephanie Meyer has been all over the place these days. Her young adult novels, The Twilight Series, have become extremely popular, so I was excited to read one of her books and find out what the fuss was all about. I wasn't disappointed.

The Host is Meyer's first adult novel. In this book, Earth has been invaded by unseen aliens who must use human bodies as hosts for their own species. These aliens occupy the mind and retain the memories of the human host and then continue the lifestyle and habits of the host as though nothing had changed.
The novel begins when Melanie, one of the few remaining humans, is captured and the alien soul, Wanderer, is placed inside her body. Melanie, the ultimate survivor, fights against Wanderer's occupation, refusing to succumb to this new inhabitant, and trying desperately to keep the soul from discovering the whereabouts of her little brother and the man she loves.
While I have always enjoyed science fiction books, it is not a genre that I read often. This one was quite interesting! In the first half of this 619 page novel, I was mesmerized by Meyer's "out-of-this-world" ideas, but found the story moved forward rather slowly. The second half, however, was exhilarating as one exciting climax followed another to a satisfying and mysterious conclusion.
