This book made me speechless!! The numbness, pain & anxiety that the author recounted was so chilling and agonizingly realistic that it simply took my breath away. How she openly shared with the reader the horror she faced, prejudice and the unwillingness of people to help her get justice left me wondering about the enormity of courage she possessed as an 18 year old.

I wasn't very impressed with this book, though I'm sure it has effected the lives of many, especially if they have been or know someone who has been raped. I found it to be a work of fiction, though it's a memoir, and had a hard time believing the main character (the author) was for real. I can appreciate that the author must have been a pioneer for rape victims in 1981, and her story taken in...more
This is a very touching account of what Alice went through as a teenager. You feel with her, you cry with her, you rejoice with her, you see how what happened to her impacted her life and shook her to the very core. Very moving and beautifully written -her writing style invites you into her life. She will have helped many young women who have had similar experiences.
very powerful story of Alice and her courage to survive and to not be a victim but a survivor. I think why some have trouble with the story is that she does go into such detail. sometimes what a person rights is more for their own self recovery and need to own what has happened. some will get it,some will not.
I had to prepare myself to read this book because I knew that it would be honest and would not hide anything. I was prepared for the graphic content, which was a good thing. This book I had to read and I think that it is amazing, but is not to be read by the feint-hearted. I admire Alice Sebold and kept googleing her throughout the book just to make sure that her life got better. When the book...more
