This will not be a popular ciritique among English majors and coffee shop folk musicians alike. I have always taken a much contrarian view toward "Catcher in the Rye." It's not that I find the realism offensive or believe that it inspires children to become mad men--because I don't I just think that it's overrated because it is so "edgy." I honestly had trouble getting through the first four chapters without falling asleep. I think that many of the rip-offs are better written and more entertaining. I think accounting literature is more interesting in comparison. hide
Certainly a classic for the high school reading list, and one of the only ones that should probably actually be on those lists. It is something the kids can relate to, as opposed to the tripe that Shakespeare wrote.
