The Shrine

Read this on holiday, and enjoyed it very much. Herbert is hit and miss for me, ideas often outpacing technique, but this is written with admirable restraint (at least until the bloody climax) and focus on a believable central character which helps ground the more ridiculous moments. Ultimately, it's a religious horror, so most of this ground has been covered elsewhere, but it's worth a look.
