The Elfstones of Shannara (The Sword of Shannara)

My favorite in this series.

Don't read this book before you go to bed!

Terry Brooks second novel and probably best work to date(at least in my books). Here is a book about demons, elves, and humans. About war, love and sacrifice. I have yet to read a single fantasy novel which has all of the above so well integrated into the entire tale. From its start to its emotional conclusion, this is one fantasy novel any fantasy reader shouldn't pass up.

It was a good sequel

This book is just as good as the first. It's nice that is takes place in a different part of the Shannara world. You get to see new things and places. A marginal drop off from the first book (The Sword of Shannara) and that's about it. Everything else is of a high quality fantasy novel.

The very first time I read this book (1984), I wept at the end such was the power of the final few chapters. And I agree with Brooks, the greatest "magic" remains in the giving of yourself for others. This book has everything - a pitched battle between good and evil, a quest, a love story, and the power of the "weak" to overcome the strong. A very good read.

I love the characters most of all in this story. My favorite is actually, Eretria. I love the new types of magic found in this world. Great Job Terry Brooks!!
