Horrible book. If you are given a copy, it would be a better use of your time to use it for TP than reading.

I really liked this book as it shed light on some dark spots for me with regard to vietnam. Very well written and even exciting for a history book.

Great into to government folly which is defined as when a government acts against its own self interest even though it has repeated warning from neutral or non-biased experts that what it is doing is detrimental. The book covers 4 different historical events: The battle of Troy, The great schism in the catholic church, the American Revolution, and the Vietnaum War.

Classic Tuchman. Elegant, knowledgeable and strong narrative. The exploration of folly by governments would have been strengthened by the examination of the opposite. Do we have examples of governments where we can all agree: They thought and acted in a rational and laudable way?

Tuchman's examination of historical instances in which nations act against their own interests is fascinating. She has an insightful and wry voice, making this a very engaging and compelling "must-read."
